Leaders in a western North Carolina county have temporarily stopped plans for a Duke Energy substation that would be near a sacred Cherokee site.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Swain County commissioners have approved a 90-day ban on electrical and mobile telephone towers.
They say that gives county staff time to research an ordinance to regulate their construction and require public input before they're built.

All these services and more are being offered at Cherokee High School through its new Community Learning Center program.
Every second and fourth Wednesday through May, Cherokee is offering tutoring for middle and high school students in the media center.
At the same time, parents and can stop into the school and take part in classes being offered by Evesham vendors.

The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a maroon or red Jeep Cherokee that pulled into the path of a motorcyclist outside Derby Lane on Sunday night, injuring the rider.
It was one of two motorcycle accidents that left both riders in critical condition this weekend in Pinellas County.
Sunday's crash took place around 8:29 p.m., according to the FHP.

The Cherokee Nation hosted a ground breaking in its industrial park in Stilwell on Friday for an expansion of PecoFacet , a company specializing in process filtration products for oil and gas natural resource industries.
PecoFacet currently employs 140 people at its Stilwell location, with more than 70 percent of those workers being citizens of Cherokee Nation and other native American tribes.
The planned 60,000 square feet expansion will make way for jobs growth.

He has been traveling the country emceeing powwows for 26 years, but Rob Daugherty, Cherokee, believes there are still places to see and new friends to make.
Powwow dancing is not a Cherokee tradition.
He said he was introduced to powwow tradition by roommates while attending Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan., and learned even more about powwows when he taught at Haskell.

North Carolina's Swain County board of commissioners issued on March 9 a 90-day moratorium on the building of a substation near the historic Cherokee site of Kituwah.
Citizens and governments of all three federally recognized Cherokee tribes – the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the United Keetoowah Band and Cherokee Nation – have expressed concern that a Duke Energy substation would sit too close to Kituwah, which is considered the sacred mother town for Cherokees.

Smith and Cherokee county fire crews responded to a home in the 7300 block of Cherokee County Road 3906.

Unless you are a fan of free throws (and really, who is?), Cherokee's 49-42 win over Montgomery in the NJSIAA Boys Basketball Group 4 tournament on Thursday night here was tough to watch.
The two teams combined to shoot 28 percent from the floor, but it was the Chiefs ability to knock down free throws that made the difference.
Cherokee jumped out to an 11-point lead at the half (20-9), as the Cougars looked as if they were just happy to be in their first-ever state semifinals.

Alabama State Troopers say a sleeping driver may have caused a Thursday evening crash that killed two men standing on the side of U.S. 431.
Patrick Ray Hicks, 39, of Glencoe, and Charles Marshall Avery, 50, of Weaver, died after being hit by a trailer struck by another vehicle about three miles south of Glencoe, according to Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown.
The crash took place at about 5:15 p.m., Brown said.

It has been almost a year since the big Cherokee Reunion celebration was held at Red Clay Historic Area in Bradley County.
A second homecoming event is scheduled this Saturday at the local landmark.
Unlike the week-long reunion of a year ago, culiminated by a Council meeting, this second reunion is only for a single day.
